What is the meaning behind the white makeup and colorful eye make-up of Chinese women?

Why do they paint their faces white and wear really bright eye make-up and bright red lipstick? Serious answers only, please! What is the meaning behind the white makeup and colorful eye make-up of Chinese women?
Geisha's faces are painted white as a sign of wealth; if you were rich you wouldn't have to work outside in the sun on the farm, therefore your skin would not tan and you would be pale.

The lips are painted red as a sign of beauty/seduction.

Hope this helps you :)What is the meaning behind the white makeup and colorful eye make-up of Chinese women?
I'm not sure WHY but I remember in 8th grade we learned that white stuff was made out of bird crap. Those girls are brave I would NOT put that on.
They often have crazy makeup like that for traditional Chinese opera. I'm not sure if that's what you mean though.
I wasn't aware that they still did that.

The Japanese and Koreans used to do itas well. They used make up the same way people still do-to look nice. And to also represent beauty, wealth, and stuff like that.
It could be a cultural thing....
i dunno
